The City of San Diego's New Urban Agriculture Ordinance: What does it say and how did it get that way?

Description: This session will discuss how the City of San Diego recently passed a series of ordinances that legalized bees, chickens and miniature goats, creates two new commercial local food uses in the zoning and made it easier to start farmers markets.

Food Sovereignity / La Soberanía de Los Alimentos
Time: 9:30 - 10:30 am
Description: Discuss food sovereignty / "free trade" as experienced and analyzed by movements of farmers, peasants and indigenous people in many countries around the world. At the same time they will discuss how these lessons are being learned about and experienced in neighborhoods here in San Diego. The presentation will explore the relationship between food creation and democracy creation. There will be slides and the discussion will be predominantly in Spanish. / Habrá una presentación (con fotos) y discusión. La presentación se trata de la soberanía de los alimentos y de los tratados de comercio libre (como NAFTA) y como han sido analizado por movimientos de campesin@s, indigenas, y granjeros en muchos paises del mundo. Who Gives a Cluck About Backyard Chickens

Description: Jill Richardson, mama to seven lovely hens, will provide the basics on keeping backyard chickens in San Diego. The talk will cover where to get chickens locally, what kinds to get, chicken feed, chicken coops, and using chicken manure in your garden with plenty of time for questions.

Free Make & Take Planting Stations: make your own soil; 4" biodegradable jiffy pot; 3" vial filled with sunflower seeds for local birds; brown paper bag to carry items; membership card badge inserted into lanyard.
Observation & Touch Tables: worm farm observation table; the look and feel of a healthy compost and composting critters (sow bugs, ear wigs, Jerusalem crickets and snails).
Aiding the Endangered Monarch Butterfly and Checker Spotted Butterfly: Native Plantago plant for the endangered Chercker Spotted Butterfly; ladybug kit; worm farm start kit (children will dig their own worms).

Description: While farmers markets have seen a nearly four-fold increase since 1994, the number of people who eat locally and seasonally is still a relatively small number and is often divided along socio-economic lines. This workshop discusses the reasons why this is the case and how supporters of real food can find ways outside-the-box to encourage others (and themselves) to happily make better food choices.

Bulk Buying Workshop

Description: Get in on the ground floor of a newly forming bulk buying club in San Diego. Find out what it is and if it might work for you. We hope to establish a system to purchase staples and other goods collectively to reduce packaging waste and make items less costly while building equity to eventually open a storefront that would provide underserved communities access to these same healthy and sustainable products.
